The Eiffel Tower Turns 125 Today!
Posted March 31, 2014 by Aeon Tours
The iconic Eiffel Tower celebrates its 125th birthday today. Long renowned by visitors to Paris, the Eiffel Tower has been a symbol of Paris since it first opened in 1889. Although initially scorned by critics, the tower has come to symbolize France and Paris, and is revered by locals and travelers alike.
Throughout its storied history, it has served many purposes in France. It was the tallest manmade structure in the world when it first opened, and remained the leader for almost 4 decades. During WW2, the French put a radio-jamming transmitter atop of it, and that stayed there until the Germans scaled it and replaced that with a swastika when they took Paris.
Enough history! Here's a visitor factoid for you: each year, more than 6 million people visit the Eiffel Tower, and there have been more than 250 million visitors since it opened! You can visit the tour with us at Aeon, on our Paris Essentials, Paris Photo Tours, and our Private Tours.
