Quick facts

Every evening at 6:30PM, a torch at the base of the Arc is lit to commemorate the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

The Arc is part of the Axe historique, a series of monuments and thoroughfares that run from the Louvre to the outskirts of Paris.

There are 4 sculptural groups on each of the Arc's pillars: Le Départ de 1792, Le Triomphe de 1810, La Résistance de 1814 and La Paix de 1815

Napoleon commissioned the Arc in 1806 but died before he got to see it completed.
